City History and Facts
Brighton area is located in southeastern Michigans Livingston County, adjacent to the intersection of Interstate 96 and US-23. This picturesque area hosts a diverse economy, including auto manufacturing, plastics technology and wood products, not to mention numerous small business. Conveniently situated half-way between the Detroit Metro area and Lansing, and half-way between Ann Arbor and Flint, Brighton makes for an ideal location for commuter-style living, retaining small town charm and atmosphere. A walk in the park by the pond downtown is a pleasant diversion, where one can view the old town hall and St. James Church, each displaying unique architectural style.
Brighton was originally founded in 1832 by its first settler, Maynard Maltby. He named it Ore Creek due to the mineral deposits he discovered there. In 1836, it received a post office station, and was re-named in 1838 by popular vote after Brighton, New York, where many of its settlers came from. It organized as a village in 1867 and eventually as a city in 1928.
During the 1970's Brighton Area was the fastest growing county in Michigan, but 20,000 acres of public land were kept from development to retain the area's natural beauty. The Brighton Island and Pinckney State Recreation areas make this a great county for recreation.
